We sat down one Thursday evening into my living room in the imaginary land of Pünique and had a little tea, listened to some music, sorry guys, only "tuubi" and had a pretty intresting conversation which I?m trying to re-build in here now.
E: So. Let's start with a normal boring warm-up questions: Who are you in real life
A: My name is Tal Cohen, I was born in Kibuts, Israel. Nowadays I live in Tampere, Finland with my wife and my son Ariel.
E: How have you ended up into one of the northernmost countries from warm and sunny Israel?
A: I met my wife during my time in the army. We both travelled between these two countries until we decided to live together. We first lived in Israel but thing there got so hasty that we moved to Finland and here I am now.
At this moment we put on a promo mix made by Dj Auspexx and I must admit it was very good, though it was way too short but that?s the way it always is with good mixes. Tal has been djing for years, starting out as a bar dj. After he got out from army he went to work in Eilat in South-Israel. After working there for two years couple of co-workers introduced him to psychedelic trance and after a couple of months he went to his first party.
"When I got into trance scene I had a need to also involve the creation part and that's propably why I got into djing."
He's interest to psytrance started with goa and moving from there more and more towards the progressive scandosound.
"It was totally amazing experience. 3000 people having fun and being very open minded and friendly to each other. It was about a year later that I first time played in Finland with such names as Halo and Synchro in a party in Lepakko."
Tal started straightly to play with cds which was quite hard because back then it was the golden times of DATs and minidiscs. Going back to Israel he met Gaddi Marian (Dj Bog) who was working with the Underground Sound Of Tel-Aviv (USTA) at that time. After a while Tal had a chance of compiling a compilation to USTA called Digital Drops including Finnish artists such as Outolintu, Highpersonic Whomen and Squaremeat.
Collaboration with Gaddi led to founding a label called Com.pact records with him where Tal is being as the labels A&R nowadays. He has also released couple tracks under same name, Auspexx.
E: What do you think about the Finnish psytrance scene?
A: I've been following the Finnish scene quite a long time. It has been interesting to see that people in Finland are enjoying all sides of psychedelic trance, their own recognisable Finnish sound as well as
progressive sound and fullon type of stuff. I knew that Finns are very open minded for different sounds and the interesting thing is there is big variety of different styles in one party.
E: What kind of musical background do you have?
A: I've played couple instruments for a while f.ex. cello, but didn't find my cup of tea until founding djing.
E: What is your goal as a dj?
A: When I play, I don't like to play straight forward one type of set. I like to take the sound to different directions and this way create small peaks which lead in the end to one big explosion so the crowd won?t get bored of the same sound track after another. There has to be that groove and interesting ideas, not just same straight forward rolling grooveline but different sides of psychedelic trance. When I'm playing for the crowd it?s my vision but for the crowd. I'm not there to teach people more of trying to make people enjoy with my vision. As a dj I 'm an entertainer, people are paying for the party to enjoy and have a good time, not to see me and I want to give them that feel of uplift.
